What Are Dental Implants?

Understanding Dental Implants

Dr. Ryan Look explains the dental implant process, what to expect, and how implants restore your smile with permanent, natural-looking results.

Types of Dental Implants We Offer

From a single missing tooth to a full-mouth restoration, we have the right implant solution for you.

Single Tooth Implants

A single dental implant replaces one missing tooth without affecting the healthy teeth on either side — unlike a traditional bridge, which requires grinding down adjacent teeth for support. Ideal for patients missing a single front or back tooth due to injury, decay, or extraction.

Multiple Tooth Implants & Implant-Supported Bridges

When several teeth in a row are missing, two or more implants can support a fixed bridge — a stable, long-term alternative to a removable partial denture. This option restores chewing function and prevents bone loss in the gaps.

All-on-4 Full-Arch Dental Implants

All-on-4 is a full-mouth restoration that uses just four strategically placed implants to support an entire arch of fixed teeth — upper, lower, or both. It's an excellent choice for patients with extensive tooth loss or those seeking an alternative to traditional dentures. Many patients leave our office the same day with a temporary set of fixed teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

For patients who already wear dentures or need full-arch replacement on a more flexible budget, implant-retained dentures snap securely onto two to four implants — eliminating slipping, improving chewing, and preserving jawbone.

The Dental Implant Procedure: What to Expect

A clear, patient-friendly overview of the process — from your first consultation to your final restoration.

1. Consultation & 3D Planning

Your journey begins with a one-on-one consultation at our White Plains office — a short drive from Waldorf, La Plata, Hughesville, and Brandywine. We'll review your medical and dental history, perform a comprehensive oral exam, and capture a 3D cone-beam CT scan of your jaw. This advanced imaging lets Dr. Look and Dr. McElveen evaluate bone density, locate nerves, and digitally plan the exact position of every implant before surgery.

2. Site Preparation (If Needed)

Patients who have lost teeth months or years ago often experience jawbone loss. In these cases, we may recommend a bone graft or sinus lift to rebuild the foundation needed to support an implant. Both procedures are performed in our office under sedation.

3. Implant Placement

On the day of surgery, your implant is placed using computer-guided surgical technology for sub-millimeter precision. Most patients are sedated using IV anesthesia and feel no discomfort during the procedure. A single implant typically takes 30–60 minutes.

4. Healing & Osseointegration

Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone, creating a permanent root structure. Sedated patients receive complimentary PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment to accelerate healing and reduce post-operative discomfort.

5. Final Restoration

Once your implant has fully integrated, we take digital impressions and coordinate directly with your general dentist (or our partner labs) to fabricate your final crown, bridge, or denture — saving you extra visits.

Insurance & Financing for Dental Implants

We accept most major dental insurance plans and will verify your benefits before treatment to maximize your coverage. For patients who prefer to spread payments over time, we partner with CareCredit and other patient financing options so that high-quality oral surgery care remains accessible.

Our front-office team will walk you through every cost consideration during your consultation so there are no surprises.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most healthy adults missing one or more teeth are candidates for dental implants.

The best candidates have:

  • Good general health and well-controlled chronic conditions
  • Healthy gum tissue free of active periodontal disease
  • Sufficient jawbone density (or willingness to undergo bone grafting)
  • A commitment to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits

Patients who smoke, have uncontrolled diabetes, or take certain medications may still qualify but require additional planning. The only way to know for sure is a full consultation with one of our oral surgeons.

Dental Implant FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about dental implants at Charles County Surgical Arts.

With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. The titanium post itself is highly durable, and the crown on top typically lasts 15–20 years before needing replacement.
No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation, so you'll feel nothing during surgery. Most patients report mild soreness for 2–3 days afterward, easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
From initial consultation to final crown, the full process typically takes 4–8 months — most of which is healing time. Some patients qualify for same-day implants or All-on-4, where temporary teeth are placed immediately after surgery.
Coverage varies by plan. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of the implant procedure, abutment, or crown. Our team will verify your benefits before treatment and help maximize your coverage.
Bone grafting and sinus lift procedures can rebuild the jawbone foundation needed to support an implant. Both are performed in our office and add 3–6 months to the overall timeline.
Care for your implants exactly like natural teeth — brush twice daily, floss, and visit your general dentist every six months for cleanings.
Yes, but smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure. We strongly recommend quitting at least two weeks before surgery and throughout the healing period.
Most patients return to work the next day. For more complex cases or full-arch surgery, we recommend taking 2–3 days off.
